Featured Farmdog - Frisco the Therapy Dog
Annika's Joaquin "Frisco", TDI
Danish-Swedish Farmdogs can do many things. One of the most rewarding things Frisco and I h
ave had the pleasure of getting involved with is Therapy dog work. We are sponsored by Therapy Dogs International. (TDI)
Farmdogs are natural for this because of the great temperament they have, and their great desire to please. Only dogs that can pass a 10 part test on obedience and temperament can become certified as therapy dogs.
We go to nursing homes and hospitals throughout the area we live for Pet Therapy Day. The residents look forward to our group coming each month.
In addition to these visits we also go to an elementary school and take part in Children Reading to Dogs, also known as “Tail Waggin Tutors” which is another program sponsored by TDI.
Some children might have a little trouble learning to read or be self conscious about reading in front of classmates or teachers. This is a 1 on 1 program with an individual student cuddled up with a dog and reading aloud to him.
In the short time Frisco and I have been going to the school we have seen the children’s confidence and reading skills grow in a relaxing environment.
Each week we spend a few minutes before and after the reading session to pet and play. All the feedback we’ve received from the teachers and principal is that the students look forward to this time spent with Frisco almost as much as recess.
Farmdogs ROCK.
